The Giver

Author: Lois Lowry

Genre: Speculative Fiction

This is a story of a Utopia were Jonas and his “family” live.  When he becomes a 12, he receives his job, a very unique one.  Now, all of the community’s memories will be passed on to him.  When a newchild visits his dwelling, Jonas must act quickly to save the newchild from being released.  What will be the fate for Jonas and the newchild?

The theme of this book is about what lengths we would go to and how much we will give up to create a “perfect” community.  In the author’s opinion when you give up too much it makes you seem not mentally human, like how they treat people what they are not wanted or needed. In this book they truly don’t care about the people they live with.   I agree entirely with the author completely.  In this book everyone seems very far from human, they are almost like robots.  Also, when people try to create a perfect society it can usually turns into a horrible thing.

Although this book is very slow at the beginning, it turns out to be a really good suspenseful book.  I would rate this book four out of five stars because of the somewhat high amount of questions that this book leaves unanswered.  If you are looking for a good book that takes some thinking, this would be a very good book for you. Overall, I would recommend this book to most people.
